# What Investi is

> A read-only research workspace for your own equities history. It never trades, uses delayed data, and is research, not advice.

Investi is a research workspace for personal equities investing. It reads your own trade history, scores securities against a written, versioned set of rules, and shows you the result with the numbers behind it. It never touches your brokerage account beyond reading it.

## What Investi does

- **Builds a ledger from your records.** Imported Schwab exports, a Schwab API connection, or a generic CSV become fills, cash events and positions. The ledger matches lots (FIFO, LIFO or HIFO), counts round trips and computes realized P/L to the cent. See [The ledger](/docs/concepts/ledger).
- **Evaluates securities against your rules.** A deterministic policy engine turns price history, SEC filings and fundamentals into a verdict such as GREEN, YELLOW or RED, with every rule outcome listed. See [Verdicts and policy](/docs/concepts/verdicts-and-policy).
- **Screens for candidates.** A resumable screen walks a universe of US listings and tracks which names are new, changed or unchanged since your last analysis. See [Candidate states](/docs/concepts/candidate-states).
- **Shows the same numbers everywhere.** The website, the REST API, the Claude MCP connector, the Chrome extension and the desktop app all read the same server calculations. See [Canonical numbers](/docs/concepts/canonical-numbers).

## What Investi is not

### Not a trading tool

Investi never places, changes or cancels orders. There is no code path that does it, and no permission scope that allows it. The Schwab integration calls only read endpoints (accounts, positions, balances, orders and transactions). The scopes you can grant to tokens and to Claude are `market:read`, `portfolio:read`, `research:read`, `workspace:write` and `simulate`. `workspace:write` saves notes, watchlists and alerts inside Investi; it never writes to a broker. `simulate` runs hypothetical scenarios and never submits anything.

Orders you see in Investi are either mirrored from Schwab or recorded by you by hand so they show up in your exposure. Recording one does not send it anywhere.

### Not real-time

Quotes, price history, earnings calendars and analyst consensus come from Nasdaq's public endpoints. They are delayed about 15 minutes, and every quote carries a freshness label (LIVE, DELAYED, STALE or UNKNOWN) computed from the age of the data. Real-time exchange quotes, Level II, licensed news, individual analyst firm targets, options, futures and FX are not licensed, so Investi does not show or approximate them. See [Data sources](/docs/concepts/data-sources) and [Coverage and provenance](/docs/concepts/coverage).

### Not investment advice

A verdict is the output of your own rules applied to public data. It is research, not a recommendation, and never an order. Every company report ends with the same disclaimer: "Research output from your own rules and public data. Not investment advice. Investi never places, modifies or cancels orders."

Some checks cannot be automated, such as whether a business model is being replaced or whether a live legal event is pending. Those appear as MANUAL rows. They never count as passes, so a GREEN verdict still asks you to complete them.

## Where the language model fits

If the server has `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` set, the research page offers a plain-language explanation of a report. The model receives the finished report and is instructed to use only facts and numbers that appear in it, to treat third-party text such as filing descriptions as data rather than instructions, and never to recommend buying or selling.

The model explains verdicts. It never computes one. Verdicts, rule outcomes, P/L and every other figure come from the deterministic engine in `packages/core`, so the same inputs and the same policy version always produce the same verdict. Without an API key, everything except the explanation panel works the same.

## Your data stays yours

Each account on an Investi deployment is a private workspace. Every table is keyed by user, so other people on the same deployment cannot see your portfolio, history or research. Broker tokens are encrypted at rest, and Investi never sees your Schwab password. See [Security and privacy](/docs/support/security-privacy).
